TREASURE CHEST THURSDAY ~ ELIJAH & MARY ANN HENSON-INGLE'S SILVERWARE!

This is a photo of the silverware that Mary Ann brought with her over the Oregon Trail in 1862 when the family came by wagon from Iowa to what is now the Milton-Freewater, Or./Walla Walla, Wa. area. Another gg-granddaughter, Darlene Robinson, has the silverware and very kindly shared a photo of it with me!

VETERAN'S DAY TRIBUTE

VETERAN'S DAY TRIBUTE
November 11, 2009
RICHARD CARR BOWMAN

I decided to pick one of my Veteran's to Honor today and chose my 2nd Great-Grandfather:

Richard Carr Bowman was born 23 Nov 1837 in Washington Co., TN.
He enlisted in Crawford's 60th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry in 1862 and was captured at Vicksburg, Ms on 17 May 1863 at the battle of the "Big Black". He survived 21 months in 3 prisoner of war camps. He was first sent to Camp Morton, IN., from there to Fort Delaware, DE and finally to Point Lookout in VA. where he was exchanged in Feb 1865.

He went on to marry Mary White on 14 Jan 1866 and have two children, ten grandchildren and too many descendants to list.

I am very proud of all my families Veteran's, but I felt Richard deserved this spot of honor for surviving and continuing our line.

Black Sheep Sunday - BENJAMIN BUTTERFIELD AKA DAN BRASHER

I'm not sure if this is a Black Sheep post or Unsolved Mystery Case!
Benjamin Butterfield was b. 16 Aug 1886 in Cherokee Co., Ia. and d. 18 Jan 1969 in Fallon, Churchill, Nv.
He was the first born of Walter Scott Butterfield and Lutisha (found spelled several ways) Johnson-Butterfield.
On 12 Sep 1918 he filled out his WW1 Draft Registration Card while he was a prisoner at the U. S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Ks. under the name Dan Brasher. As a child I was told that he had changed his name because he had deserted the Army during the WWI. While trying to locate military records for Benjamin you can imagine my surprise when I found him listed as Dan Brasher! Obviously, he had started using his alias prior to joining the Army.
He was enumerated in the 1920 census as Dan Brasher in 1930 as Ben Butterfield in 1936 he got his Social Security number under the name Dan Brasher and in 1969 when he passed away in Fallon, Nv. he was buried under his alias, Dan Brasher.
The burning question is: Why; What & Where did he do something so horrific that he would change his name; join the Army and live the rest of his life under his assumed name???
There is obviously much more to this mystery and I will write more in depth about why he was incarcerated at Fort Leavenworth in another post :-)

Follow Friday, November 6th, 2009

I follow Attic Treasures, why you may ask, well the answer would be because it is Diane's fault that I am now trying to start a genealogy blog. The second reason is because she has some incredible information on her blog and it is fun to read.
